Bobrick – 2006 Strategy
Strategy – it’s a roadmap for your vision. It’s the pathway to get you where you want to go.
I begin my strategy with an honest assessment of my team. I assess each individual crewmember. I evaluate their strengths and weaknesses. Some guys come in with God-given talent and I only have to point them in the right direction.
Most have to work hard to discover and develop their talent. That’s where my training strategy comes in. First I break it down. It’s the training. Getting their bodies in shape. Teaching them basics, then I bring them all together and forge them into a team.
I employ different strategies for each phase of the goal. Individual strategy is custom. Team strategy is shared. If you think about it, individual rowers never even see the finish line. They’re rowing backwards. They function as a team unit. Finding their rhythm together. Doing their job.
They do not have the same view that others have. They need a leader to guide them. They need someone to tell them to pick up the tempo, to shift it back or just hold it steady. At the end of the day, we need strategy when anticipating racing conditions.
Who’s the competition? What challenges will we face? Is my crew and equipment top of the line? As a coach, there are always things that are out of my control. Like the weather, the wind, the water currents. What’s most important on the playing field is to know what’s in my control.
That’s what we train for. I can only control my team and train them to be the best they can be.
That’s what a training strategy is all about.
